Highway Patrol stopping motorists at checkpoints
The Florida Highway Patrol is conducting what they are calling driver license and vehicle inspection checkpoints in Lee, Hendry and Glades counties this month.
They were in full force today in Lehigh Acres at Sunshine, south of Lee Blvd. off of 23rd St. Motorists said there were several cars pulled to the side at the checkpoint for inspections.
FHP officials say that in Lee County, they will be at Sunshine south of Lee Blvd., in Lehigh, on North River Rd., Alva, west of the Hendry County line; Bell Blvd., in Lehigh, north of SR82 and Hart Drive, north SR78 at different times during April in East Fort Myers.
The police said the checkpoints are being conducted for the safety of the driving public. Troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated with defects such as bad brakes, worn tires and defective lighting equipment.
In addition, they said attention will be directed to drivers who would violate the driver license laws of Florida.
Officials with the Highway Patrol said they have found these checkpoints to be an effective means of enforcing the equipment and driver license laws of Florida while ensuring the protection of all motorists.
In addition to Lee County, the FHP will have checkpoints in Hendry County at Cowboy Way, Immokalee, west of SR29 and County Rd. 78;, east of the Hendry and Lee county line.
In Glades County, they will have checkpoints at SR78, west of Rt. 27, SR29 and County Rd. 74, and SR78 and U.S. 27.
