Police: Baby critical after being shaken

By Staff | Apr 8, 2009

A six-month old baby is in critical condition after being shaken by a caretaker who subsequently was charged with aggravated child abuse, officials said Wednesday.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was notified Tuesday that the child was airlifted from North Naples Hospital to Joe DiMaggio Hospital in Broward County due to injuries possibly caused while in the custody of the suspect, later identified as Stephany Diana Gomez-Aguilar.
Investigators with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office determined the physical injures the child suffered were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome, officials said. Because the baby was injured in Bonita Springs, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Unit then assumed the investigation.
Investigators made contact with Aguilar at her home, listed as 11231 Torchfire Trail, and took her to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. Detectives determined that Aguilar held the baby by the ribs while it was crying and began shaking it, causing the injuries, officials said.
Aguilar was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated child abuse. She was taken to the Lee County Jail for booking.
