Four teens have been charged with criminal mischief after a half dozen vehicles, including a police cruiser, were hit with paint balls.
Raynard Silas Robinson, 18, Ronald Ricardo Ward-James, 18, Jose E. Sanchez, 19, and one juvenile male were shooting paintballs randomly from their vehicle as they drove by other vehicles late last night or early this morning, officials said. One of the vehicles targeted was a Cape police cruiser driven by Officer Dan Leger.
Leger had responded at 1 a.m. to complaints from two drivers who reported that their vehicles had been hit by orange paintballs shot by someone in a passing vehicle. Both drivers provided a description of the vehicle.
Leger was traveling eastbound on Hancock Bridge Parkway looking for the vehicle when he heard a “pop” and pulled over to find that his cruiser had been hit on the passenger side by an orange paintball.
Officer Patrick Taylor located a vehicle matching the description parked in a driveway with four occupants. A paintball gun could be seen in plain view in the backseat, and a bag of paintballs matching the color of the ones used in the attacks also was in the vehicle, officials said.
The four suspects were arrested, and post-Miranda, all reportedly admitted their involvement in the paintball incidents. Ward-James admitted to being the one who shot the police cruiser, stating he did not realize it was a police car until it was too late, officials said.
A total of six complaints were recevied, officials said.
