Members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Division conducting a traffic stop found 12 pounds of cocaine concealed in the vehicle, officials said Friday.
Deputies stopped a black Ford Taurus traveling on I-75 near mile marker 143/Bayshore Road on Thursday at approximately 7:03 p.m. The suspect vehicle was pulled over for traveling too closely behind another vehicle, officials said.
Investigators said they made contact with the driver and observed several indicators of criminal activity.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit responded to assist with the investigation and agency canine Sapper alerted detectives to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.
A subsequent search of the suspect’s vehicle revealed a total of five kilos of cocaine, worth an estimated street value of $150,000, concealed under a rear seat, officials said.
Each kilo was packaged in the shape of a brick, wrapped in black electrical tape. Combined, the five packages weighed a total of 12.6 pounds.
Both subjects were arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail.
Due to the large amount of narcotics present in the vehicle, the Fort Myers Drug Enforcement Agency assumed the investigation and is charging both suspects with federal drug charges.
Arrested and charged are Timothy Williams, 38, of 601 NE 36th Street, Miami, and Melinore Fair, 57, of 3520 Grand Avenue, Miami.
