Police identify crash victim
Cape Coral police have identified the man who died after he lost control of his vehicle and drove into a marshy area off Del Prado Boulevard Monday night.
The man has been identified as Drake B. Stephenson, who was carrying a driver’s license from Indiana.
Police are continuing a death investigation and awaiting information from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Initial reports state the man suffered what emergency workers believed was a gunshot wound to the head.
Police, who had received a reckless driver complaint, report they observed a white Chevy Silverado with Florida tags traveling north bound, swerving between lanes shortly after 8:30 p.m.
Officer D. Barbour located the Silverado at the intersection of Del Prado Boulevard N. and Diplomat Parkway E. and initiated a traffic stop at the 2500 block of Del Prado Blvd. Barbour advised the vehicle was “all over the road” and that the driver was slumped over the steering wheel.
The vehicle rolled from the north-bound lanes of Del Prado Boulevard, across the south-bound lanes, and came to a rest in a marsh located on west side of the 2700 Block of the boulevard.
Officers found a white male in his mid 50s, later identified Stephenson, lying on the front bench seat in a pool of blood that appeared to be coming from Stephenson’s head. Stephenson was breathing but was not conscious or responsive, officials said.
A .22-caliber pistol was found in Stephenson’s lap, wedged between his legs, officials added.
Stephenson was taken, via a trauma alert, to Lee Memorial Hospital with an apparent gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at 9:32 p.m. at Lee Memorial Hospital.
