S. Ft. Myers High School takes second place in Global Math contest
The Global Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) results are in, and the South Fort Myers High School team took second place (Meritorious Winners) tying with schools like Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University, said Joe Donzelli, a spokesman for the Lee County school district.
The South Fort Myers High School team, consisting of Sarah Weber, Matt King, and Kyle Simmons, placed in the top 19 percent among all the countries of the world participating in the competition (problem A). Only seven high schools participated.
The event itself was held in February, but due to the number of participants, the results were just tabulated and released. During the contest, teams of up to three undergraduate or high school students researched, modeled and submitted a solution to one of two modeling problems.
The 2009 MCM was primarily an online contest. Teams registered, obtained contest materials, and downloaded the problem and data at the prescribed time through COMAP’s MCM Web site.
