A motorcycle driver was seriously injured Sunday when his bike collided with a car at the intersection of Pine Island Road and Andalusia Boulevard.
Brett Michael Barnard, 20, of 117 Little Grove Lane, North Fort Myers, and his 18-year-old passenger were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital after being ejected from the motorcycle.
Barnard’s injuries were life-threatening, officials said. The passenger, whose name has not been released pending notification of a parent, suffered serious injuries. She is expected to recover.
The accident happened at 3:08 p.m.
According to police, Vannessa Miret, 16, of 1328 N.E. 8th Place, was stopped on Andalusia at the intersection of Pine Island Road. She was on the south side of Pine Island heading northbound on Andalusia.
Barnard was riding a 2007 Yamaha R6 on Pine Island Road heading westbound in the outside lane.
Miret, who was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima, drove northbound across Pine Island Road and into the right of way of the motorcycle, officials said. Barnard was unable to avoid the Nissan and struck the passenger side of the car. The impact ejected Barnard and his passenger from the motorcycle, and both riders ended up in the southbound lanes of Andalusia Boulevard. The motorcycle came to rest upside down in the median of Andalusia.
Both riders were wearing helmets.
Miret and her passenger, Miriam V. Miret, Vanessa’s mother, were not injured.
There were no signs of impairment, officials said.
Due to the seriousness of the injuries suffered by Barnard, a traffic homicide investigation is being conducted.
Additional information will be released when available, officials said.
The crash was the second serious collision in the Cape involving a motorcycle in two days.
On Friday, a Cape Coral man was critically injured after he was ejected from his motorcycle when it was struck from behind while slowing for a traffic light on Del Prado Boulevard.
Ronald L. Johnson, 53, of 1307 S.E. 13th Terrace, was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital after the 10:27 p.m. collision near Southeast 26th Street.
He died at the hospital, officials said.
According to police, Johnson was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound in the center lane of Del Prado when he slowed for a traffic signal, which had turned from green to yellow. The driver behind him, Ryan S. Schaufert, 23, was unable to avoid the motorcycle and drove the front end of his 2004 Toyota Matrix onto the rear wheel of the bike.
The impact ejected Johnson from the motorcycle, and he came to rest in the roadway.
Schaufert, 23, of 1718 S.E. 2nd Street, was not injured in the crash.
Johnson’s death is the second fatality reported in Cape Coral this year. Both individuals were riding motorcycles.
