Alley is closed to motorists today

By Staff | Apr 27, 2009

Motorists are being advised today that Interstate 75 will remain closed due to the 22,000- acre brush fire.

In a press release, Lt. Christopher Miller of the Florida Highway Patrol said the decision was made to do a backburn in an area between where the fire is now to Turner River Rd on both the north and south sides of I-75, also known as Alligator Alley.

According to the press release, the backfire will create a buffer between the Alley and the larger fire.

Firefighters are continuing to fight the blaze by working to contain it on the east side at Turner River Rd. and on the west at SR29, according to the FHP press release

If the backburn works, the Alley is likely to be open for some periods on Tuesday, the Florida Highway Police said.
