The City of Cape Coral and the Native Plant Society will work together to xeriscape the median on Hancock Bridge Parkway just west of Del Prado Boulevard on Saturday, May 2.
Work will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until noon. This is a test median to determine if xeriscaping plants can be used for future median improvement projects.
The city and the Native Plant Society began planning this project in September last year. The society provided the landscaping design, and the city is providing the plants. Members of the society will do the planting on Saturday. If this median xeriscaping project is successful, the city will continue to xeriscape other medians west on Hancock Bridge Parkway to Santa Barbara Boulevard.
“Xeriscaping” is a “green” landscaping concept that uses slow-growing, drought-tolerant native plants to conserve water and reduce maintenance. Native Florida plants are more resistant to insects and disease, and require little or no pesticide, herbicide or fertilizer.
The city is asking the public to call the Citizens Action Center at 574-0425 to provide their opinion on the median landscaping project. A temporary sign will be placed in the median soliciting feedback.
