Prep Report: Cape relay teams advance

By Staff | May 1, 2009

An ongoing rivalry between Cape Coral High and Venice continued Thursday at the Region 4A-2 Track & Field Meet at Tampa Gaither.

The Seahawks’ 4×100 relay team of Spencer Boyd, Prince Holloway, Jaylen Watkins and Jeremy Davis sprinted to first place in a time of 41.63 seconds. Lakeland took second in 41.88 and Venice placed third in 42.35.

Venice edged the Seahawks for first in last Thursday’s district meet.

The Indians and Seahawks met in the football playoffs each of the past two seasons with each team winning once. Several of the runners were on the field for those contests.

The Seahawks advanced two relay teams to next Saturday’s 4A state meet at Winter Park. The other being the 4×400 foursome of Tevan Gant, Arlen Elwin, Taylor Henninge and Edsel Caprice, which placed third.

In the girls’ high jump, Mariner senior Courtney Anderson took the regional title with a jump of 5-2. Two other individuals cleared the mark, but Anderson made fewer attempts.

Anderson qualified for the state meet for the fourth consecutive year. She has won four district titles and three regional titles, and finished fourth, third and second, respectively, in the state finals.

Anderson posted a school record and personal best jump of 5-8 1/2 at this year’s LCAC meet.

Mariner junior Andrew Dukas qualified for state with a third-place result in the 400. His time of 50.73 improved upon the school record he set in the district meet.

The Tritons’ 4×800 team of Emily LaBarbera, Renee Erickson, Kelsey Hasten and Alicen Wilbur came up short, finishing fifth.

North Fort Myers’ Stephanie Nevadunsky qualified, finishing fourth in the 300 hurdles. Senior Jasmine Roberts was fifth in the long jump.
