Miracle return to first place

By Staff | May 4, 2009

The Miracle used clutch hitting late in the game and a sparkling performance from their bullpen to notch the win.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Deibinson Romero atoned for his error in the top of the inning with a sacrifice fly to deep left, scoring Danny Lehmann from third for the winning run.

After the Stone Crabs jumped on top with a five-run third inning, the Miracle chipped away with three in the sixth and two in the eighth before the sac fly in the ninth. After scoring just three runs in the series’ first two games, the Miracle broke out with 12 in the final pair.

Alex Burnett (1-1) earned his first win in 2009. He worked two innings, allowing no hits. He struck out two. Santos Arias threw three scoreless innings.

Charlotte’s Cody Cipriano tagged starter Tyler Robertson for a three-run homer in the third.

The Miracle pen threw a hitless five innings and struck out four. The Charlotte pen failed to support David Newmann. Newmann pitched well in six innings with five hits, three runs, a walk, and five strikeouts. He seemed to run out of gas in the sixth, giving up three runs, but still finished the inning with the lead.

Rene Leveret went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two doubles for the Miracle. Steve Singleton was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

The Miracle travel to Sarasota for a three-game series with the Reds starting Monday at 7 p.m.
