Miracle win third straight on Monday night

By Staff | May 5, 2009

SARASOTA – The Sarasota Reds put together a rally in the ninth inning with three runs on six hits until Blair Erickson emerged from the bullpen.

Strikeout. Lineout. Strikeout.

Just like that, the Fort Myers Miracle recorded their third straight victory and Erickson’s first save of 2009 in an 8-6 victory over the Reds at Ed Smith Stadium.

Kyle Waldrop, after an effective seventh and eighth, surrendered five straight hits to the Reds before Spencer Steedley entered and allowed a hit on one pitch. Manager Jeff Smith wasted no time, removing Steedley, and Erickson rewarded his confidence with a dominating inning pitched, no hits, and two strikeouts.

Erickson saved it for Mike McCardell (3-2), who has won three straight decisions. He threw six innings with six hits allowed, three earned runs, one walk, and seven strikeouts.

Jerry Gil (0-5) took the loss with nine hits, five earned runs, three walks, four strikeouts.

Ben Revere and Deibinson Romero were both 2-for-5, with a double and stolen base for Romero to lead the Miracle (15-9). Steve Singleton had a triple and Danny Lehmann (2-for-3) scored two runs, drove in two and stole two bases. Danny Berg hit his first home run of the season.

The Miracle’s Carlos Gutierrez faces his former University of Miami teammate, Yonder Alonso, in Tuesday night’s second game of a three-game series against the Reds.
