Thousands of moms all over Lee County and Lehigh Acres are being honored today as Mother’s Day. For many people asked by The Citizen how they were going to spend the day in the paper’s Question of the Week, most said they were going to spend the day with their moms at home.

Many planned to take their moms out for dinner while others said they were going to prepare mom’s special meal at home.

After dinner, there are a couple of things you may want to do for mom.

For instance, you could take her to the Naples Zoo and the Edison Ford Winter Estates. They are inviting moms to come in free. For moms who want to stay closer to home, they can get in free at the Edison Ford winter Estates on McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers. If you haven’t been to the Estates, you are are in for a surprise since they have been renovated. Moms can get in free of charge with the purchase of a child’s ticket. Not a bad deal.

They will show you the newly restored homes of Thomas Alva Edison, one of the world’s most famous inventors who spent many winters in Fort Myers. You can also tour the winter next door home of Henry Ford, a personal friend of the Edisons a century ago. You can walk out on the wharf where Thomas Edison loved to fish in the river and you can take a walk down McGregor Ave. to see the famed palm trees, some of which were planted by Edison himself.

You can also visit the historic Botanical Gardens and go inside Edison research laboratory, the one where he was working on several projects. The Estates close at 5:30 p.m.

Or you can take mom to the beach and visit one of the restaurants there or if you want to stay in Lehigh, visit the fine restaurants in town.

If your mother lives up north, give her a call. According to phone companies, this is the day that gets most usage. If she has a computer, really go high tech and go online and chat with her using your cam.

At any rate, if you’re lucky enough to have your mother still alive, let her know how much you appreciate her. For those who have lost their mothers, think of the pleasant memories you experienced with her.
