Mariner’s Anderson captures state title

By Staff | May 10, 2009

At long last, Mariner senior Courtney Anderson captured the state title in the high jump Saturday at the FHSAA Class 4A Track and Field Finals at Winter Park.

Anderson, competing in the state finals for the fourth time, cleared a new school record and personal-best jump of 5-feet-10 to win the elusive state crown. She finished fourth, third and second in her previous three appearances.

Last year’s champion Maya Pressley of Coconut Creek jumped 5-8 to finish in second place.

The 5-foot-6 Anderson, who has signed with the University of South Florida, won her third regional title and fourth district title to advance to this year’s state meet. She had only jumped the mark of 5-10 a few times in practice this season, heading into Saturday’s final.
