Greyhound may have bolted during break-in
“They could have taken everything, just left my dog,” sobbed a woman in Lehigh today after she discovered that her greyhound dog had either been stolen or ran away during a home robbery on May 8.
The break-in occurred at 1917 Kester Avenue in Lehigh. This is where she and her family were staying until she moved into the family’s new home in Lehigh. The owner of the dog is Jaime Martin.
If anyone has spotted a grey hound, Jaime Martin urges them to call 230-462-5512. The family had been in Lehigh only for a short time at that address and if the greyhound bolted and ran from the home, she could be any where, Martin said.
“She’s not familiar with this area and she could be anywhere lost. Her name is Angel and if someone spots her, I hope they will call me and not try to get her to come to them because greyhounds are very shy with people and they will tend to run,” she said.
The incident of the robbery was reported to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the family said.
They have three dogs, the missing one is an ex-racing greyhound they call Angel. When they came home and saw there had been a break in, they were devastated to see their greyhound Angel was missing.
A woman from Brooklyn, N.Y., noticed on an Internet “amber alert” site that the greyhound was missing after the break-in and contacted the family and The Lehigh Acres Citizen.
“I had an ex-racer that recently passed away and I know how they move about, and also that they get frightened easily. The thing is, they are so fast that if their grey got out during the robbery, she could be very far away. Also, the family just moved there three weeks ago. Therefore, Angel is not familiar with the area. It’s very upsetting all around for the family and the greyhound, Angel,” Mary Ludwig of Brooklyn told The Citizen.
“I saw it on greytalk.com, a forum for people with ex-racers,” said Ludwig.
In addition to calling Jaime Martin at 239-462-5512, you can also call her aunt at 239-851-2663 or her mother, Deb Martin at 239-849-3745.
Although Ludwig has never met the Martins she said she worries that their dog may not be found.
“Greyhounds will not hang around when something scary happens – they are timid by nature as well as fast, and will bolt, even people oriented ones – so the officer who investigated the break-in probably did not realize the seriousness of the dog being gone, and that for a greyhound, gone can really mean exactly that – gone,” Ludwig said.
The family said that Angel is nine years old and was adopted in 2002 from Homeward Bound greyhound adoption. She is black with white on her nose and chest, and is very loving.”
“Chasing, or even going toward a scared greyhound more often then not makes them just keep going further away,” Ludwig said. “So I hope there is a sighting and that people will call the family. I hope they can find Angel. They are wonderful dogs,” Ludwig said.
