Cape athlete is Ave Maria’s first baseball signee
Cape Coral resident Blake Urquhart will sign a baseball scholarship with Ave Maria University in Naples Thursday, becoming the first official signee in the program’s history.
Urquhart, a senior at South Fort Myers High, had an outstanding senior year on the mound, compiling an 8-3 record with a 1.95 ERA and two no-hitters.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Urquhart also played third base and shortstop for the Wolfpack, helping them to a 14-9 record.
Urquhart played Little League and travel baseball in Southwest Florida from ages 9-11. He was on a Cape Coral-based team with Mariner senior Michael Zunino and Ida Baker senior Miles Rubinski.
After living in Colorado for a few years, Urquhart moved back to the area and attended Estero for two years before transferring to South.
Along with continuing his baseball career, Urquart, who holds a 3.4 GPA, is considering going into the education profession.
