Lehigh letter carriers collect 27,000 pounds of food
Lee County postmasters have announced that a record breaking 405,960 pounds of food items were collected on Saturday, May 9, during the letter carrier food drive, the largest one-day food drive in the nation. This shatters the previous record of 371,000 pounds in 2008.
Lehigh letter carriers collected approximately 27,000 pounds of food. This is also a new record for the Lehigh Acres Post Office. The food was divided between two of the Lehigh food banks, Lehigh Community Services and Faith Lutheran Church, said Acting Postmaster Mark A. Pie.
Lee County postmasters and letter carriers said they would like to thank the community volunteers who helped to collect food on mail routes where carriers use their private vehicles and those who helped to unload and sort the food.
All food collected in Lee county remains here locally to feed the hungry in our communities.
