School teacher takes teaching to new heights
Remember taking exams and realizing that you were one of the very first ones done? Maybe you pulled out a book to read; maybe you took a short nap. What you probably didn’t do is take your time and double check your work.
Teachers at Six Mile Charter School decided to encourage students to do just that during FCAT exams this year by creating a competition among third through eighth graders. Teachers monitored the number of students who utilized their entire testing time effectively.
The grade level with the highest percentage of students who used all of their time won the opportunity to watch their teacher skydive from an airplane. The teachers will be skydiving from Skydive Air Adventures in Clewiston at 10 a.m. this Saturday, May 16.
Fifth graders won the competition, however the middle school (which counted as a grade level) came in so close, a staff-only fundraiser was held to reward the middle school for their efforts. Fifth grade teacher, Jennifer Krzys and middle school science teacher Andy Black will don parachutes and take the leap for education.
“This is an extreme way to underline the importance of checking and rechecking work on major exams,” says Krzys. “You can bet that Andy and I will use every spare moment before the jump to check our equipment. It’s just as important during an exam. So many careless mistakes are missed because a student doesn’t utilize their time to go back over their work when they have time.”
