Rain, Yankees hand Miracle 3-1 defeat

By Staff | May 27, 2009

TAMPA – The Fort Myers Miracle were 12-6 last season against the Tampa Yankees, but their first meeting in 2009 saw the Miracle fall to the Yankees 3-1 in a rain-shortened seven innings Tuesday night.

Lance Pendleton (3-3) made his best start of the season for Tampa (19-23), winning his third game of the season to halt a personal three-game losing streak.

Tyler Robertson (2-2) gave up nine hits in six innings and three earned runs, while walking two and fanning three for the Miracle, who did not score until the top of the seventh. Kyle Waldrop pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the inning before rain halted the contest.

The previous two innings were played under increasingly heavy rain.

Chris Cates, Evan Bigley, and Ben Revere had the only hits for the Miracle (28-15).

The teams switch venues to Hammond Stadium Wednesday.

Earlier Tuesday, the Miracle added pitcher Loek Van Mil to the active roster. Van Mil, 24, from the Netherlands, the tallest player in pro baseball at 7-foot-1, was activated from the Minnesota Twins’ extended spring training program.

Van Mil is reunited with Miracle infielder Chris Cates to form the tallest and shortest duo in professional baseball. Cates is the shortest player at 5-3. The two played together last year in Beloit.
