Sheriff’s Office, Miracle team up for ‘Click it for Ticket’ promotion

By Staff | May 27, 2009

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and members of local law enforcement are teaming up with the Fort Myers Miracle to promote safety and responsibility while driving. A joint promotion called “You’ve Been Ticketed” will take place Thursday night at Hammond Stadium and is a part of Florida’s 9th Annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

Fans attending the May 28 game could get “ticketed” just by buckling up. Members of the Miracle, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and FDOT will be on hand to give out vouchers for future Miracle games if drivers and passengers are “caught” wearing their seatbelts as they arrive at the ball park.

Florida has seen a remarkable increase of 26 percent in seatbelt usage since participating in the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Florida’s compliance rate is just shy of the national average of 82 percent at 81.7 percent.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates every percentage point increase in safety belt usage saves 270 lives. Still, in Florida, three out every five crash fatalities are attributed to not wearing a seat belt, officials said.

It’s hoped continued education and enhanced enforcement capability effective in July of this year will reduce fatalities and injuries across the state, Sheriff’s officials said.

The “You’ve Been Ticketed” event starts at 6 p.m. at Hammond Stadium, located at 14100 Ben C. Pratt Six Mile Cypress Parkway, Fort Myers. Game time is 7:05 p.m. A crash test simulator, free T-shirts, and autographed cards signed by players will also be available to fans attending the game.
