Man charged in shooting death
A man investigators were seeking in connection with the June 6 shooting death of a teen in Pine Manor turned himself in to authorities today.
Adeirean Nicholas Carey, 26, has been charged with second degree murder in the death of Marcos Santiago, 17, of 1604 Oak Drive. Carey also has been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a gunshot and glass breaking in the area of Fourth Avenue and Oak Drive at 12:36 a.m. Saturday. Deputies found a broken window at 5461 Fourth Avenue. No one was located inside, but blood on a sidewalk in front of the window prompted a search by a canine unit. Santiago was found lying in the grass nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Interviews with witnesses and evidence collected reveal that Carey was inside the Fourth Avenue duplex and shot the victim through the window, officials said. Carey’s 2001 Hyundai was parked in the backyard and contained marijuana in excess of 70 grams packaged for street sale. Additionally, two handguns and a short- barreled shotgun were found. Phone call exchanges between the victim and suspect around the time leading up to the shooting were confirmed, officials said.
Detectives began looking for the suspect and Carey surrendered to deputies late this afternoon.
