New sidewalks constructed near school

By Staff | Jun 10, 2009

The thumbs sign is given by Willard Baker after a sidewalk was built in front of the new Phipps Elementary School last week. Baker has been a proponent for more sidewalks in Lehigh for several years.

The sidewalk along the commercial section of Homestead Road was completed recently. After several citizen inquiries about noticeable gaps in the sidewalk between Taylor Road and the Publix Shopping Center prompted the Community Council to take action.

Community Council representatives working with Lee County DOT, Lee County School Board and the Metropolitan Planning Organization worked out the issues and developed a plan to split the $25,000 costs to complete the sidewalk along Homestead Road in front of Lehigh Elementary School and Capital Pawn Shop.

Once this project was identified as a potential safety issue for pedestrians and children attending the transitional school building, formally a K-Mart store, the project was completed within a few months. Willard Baker a member of the Community Council and BPAC, Bicycle/ Pedestrian Advisory Committee for Lee County, said “The details and work on this project were completed in record time. This addition to the sidewalk on Homestead greatly increases safety for pedestrians and our school children.”

Another sidewalk project was recently completed also improve

The project, 12th Street West, between Sunshine Blvd. and Gunnery Road added 1.7 miles to the sidewalk network in Lehigh Acres. Several other sections of sidewalks are scheduled this year utilizing federal stimulus money provided to Lee County.

“Sidewalk construction actually creates more jobs per mile than road construction. As a BPAC and Community Council member I have been working for several years to improve sidewalk connectivity in Lehigh,” Baker said.

Citizens can express concerns on a variety of subject and issues at the Community Council meetings. The Community Council of Lehigh Acres meet the third Monday each month at New Image Ministries, 29 Homestead Rd S. Meetings start at 6:30 p.m. or you can write to the Community Council PO Box 725, Lehigh Acres FL 33970.
