Miracle overtakes Tigers, 6-1, Monday in Lakeland

By Staff | Jun 30, 2009

LAKELAND – The formula for success was a strong David Bromberg start, shutdown pitching from Spencer Steedley, and clutch hitting as the Fort Myers Miracle topped the Lakeland Tigers 5-1 Monday night to halt a three-game losing streak.

Steedley inherited a runner at third base and just one out in the bottom of the seventh in a 4-1 game. The Florida State League All-Star calmly struck out Josh Workman, who had doubled in the Tigers’ only run in the second, and induced a popup behind second base by Adrian Casanova to end the inning.

Jair Fernandez had a big two-run double down the third base line in the seventh to help break open what had been a pitchers’ duel between Bromberg (6-0) and Charlie Furbush.

“Steedley came in and got two big outs in the seventh inning, and Jair came up with a big two-run hit,” said Fort Myers manager Jeff Smith. “Those were the two difference makers in the game.”

Bromberg won his first game since May 30 by allowing just one earned run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three. Steedley, who logged 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, picked up his fourth save.

Fernandez finished 2-for-4, while Nick Romero (2-for-4) drove in two and collected two doubles. Deibinson Romero and Chris Parmelee also were 2-for-4.

The Miracle (2-3) and Tigers (2-3) meet again at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the second game of a four-game series.
