Next month’s roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

ADULTS

Book Discussion: Barack Obama’s “Audacity of Hope”

3:30 p.m. Monday, August 3

Read “Audacity of Hope” by Barack Obama and discuss it with fellow community members. The East County Book Discussion Group is open to all.

English Caf

6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 6

Practice your English in this free informal conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners a chance to practice speaking English on a variety of everyday situations. Participants may start at any time during the 10-week series. No advanced registration is required. Participants should have basic English skills.

Consumers Beware!

7 p.m. Tuesday, August 11

What are today’s top frauds and scams? When purchasing from an online auction, is it safe to pay with a credit card? Should you consider a Security or Credit Freeze as now provided by Florida law? How can you protect your credit cards? Which are legitimate charities? Is online banking safe? AARP volunteer speakers Curtis Hamilton and Jeff Montgomery will help answer these and other questions about managing your private information in order to protect yourself against today’s top consumer frauds.

Chess Anyone?

7 p.m. Tuesday, August 18

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Everyone is welcome. Bring a personal chess set, if preferred. Registration is requested. Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library.

English-Spanish Family Storytime

2 p.m. Saturday, August 1

Enjoy a special storytime in English and Spanish with family and friends.

Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

10 a.m. Saturday, August 8

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants.

KIDS

Adventures in the Deep Blue Sea

2 p.m. Saturday, August 15

Join us for an exciting “Adventures in the Deep Blue Sea” puppet show, crafts and a “fishy” building contest!

Kids Read Down Fines

4:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 26

Do you have library fines? Take care of them by reading! Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. For ages 18 and younger. Registration is required.

R.E.A.D. Program Reading to Dogs

11 a.m. Saturday, August 29

Independent readers can practice reading in a fun way! Tucker, the Reading Education Assistance Dog will be on hand to listen to you read. He’s a great listener! This pet pal is available to kids of all ages. First come, first served.
