Eagle Award to be given to Lehigh youth

By Staff | Jul 9, 2009

Adam Clemons has earned his Eagle Scout rank. A ceremony will be held July 11, at Christ United Methodist Church in Lehigh Acres to celebrate this achievement.

Eagle is the highest rank a boy can earn while in Scouts. Approximately 1.7 million boys have earned the rank in the 100-year history of Boy Scouts. To obtain the rank, the Scout must earn six previous rank advancements, a minimum of 21 merit badges, perform at least 12 hours community service while in the lower ranks, hold a position of responsibility in the troop for at least 16 months, and complete a service project that benefits either the community, or the Scout’s school or church. All of this must be done before the Scout’s 18th birthday.

His journey to Eagle started when Adam joined cub scouts in Cub Scout Pack 11. After three years of Cubs, he crossed over to Boy Scouts in 2002, earning three rank advancements by June 2003. Adam took a three-year hiatus from scouting, and then rejoined Troop 11 in 2007. His role in the troop included being elected senior patrol Leader by the other scouts.

To thank Christ United Methodist Church for their sponsorship of Boy Scout Troop 11, Adam chose an Eagle Project to benefit the church. Adam and other scouts from Troop 11 painted rooms and hallways of the first floor of the church, making a better environment for the church members and pre-school students. All Eagle Projects must be approved and all service hours performed by the Eagle candidate and volunteers are logged as part of the final Eagle process.

In June 2009, Adam graduated from Riverdale High School. He was active in ROTC during high school, and has joined the U.S. Army. He will be leaving for boot camp on July 19. Obtaining the Eagle Rank will provide him with a rank advancement in the Army upon completion of boot camp, Scout officials said.
