Reds swipe opener 5-0 from Miracle

By Staff | Jul 9, 2009

The Fort Myers Miracle opened a six-game homestand at Hammond Stadium Wednesday night against the Sarasota Reds. They’ll hope for more offense in their next five games.

The Miracle were shut out for the fourth time this season in a 5-0 loss to the Reds.

Pitcher Deolis Guerra was promoted to Double-A prior to the game. Henry Arias got the nod for the Miracle.

The right-hander, making his first start since the 2007 season, lasted four innings and allowed two earned runs.

The Miracle (50-32, 7-6) couldn’t get much going offensively. The team went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base.

Arias (1-3) finished with two strikeouts. He allowed five hits and two walks.

Jeremy Horst (5-8) earned the win for the Reds, working 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He walked four and struck out four. Relievers Joseph Krebs and Josh Beal preserved the shutout.

Ben Revere was the only Miracle to collect more than one hit as he finished 2-for-5. It was the first time the Miracle were shut out since June 2 at Brevard County.

After Guerra was promoted, left-handed pitcher Michael Tarsi was promoted from Beloit to Fort Myers. He starts Friday in the third game of the series.

Steve Hirschfeld takes the mound tonight, Thursday when the Miracle face the Reds at 7:05 p.m.
