Miracle bats silent again in 1-0 defeat
It was a different game but same story for the Fort Myers Miracle Thursday night.
For the second consecutive contest the Miracle came up empty with runners in scoring position. They haven’t produced a run in the first two games of their series against the Sarasota Reds, falling 1-0 at Hammond Stadium.
The Miracle (50-33, 7-7) is 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the series. The Reds are only the second team to blank the Miracle in consecutive games this season, joining Brevard County.
Fort Myers had two chances to tie or take the lead in the late innings. In the seventh, Mark Dolenc drilled a liner into left with two outs and Joe Benson on second. As left fielder Justin Reed scooped it up, manager Jeff Smith sent Benson to home plate, but Reed came up with a perfect throw to end the inning.
In the ninth, Deibinson Romero singled to center on the first pitch. Chris Cates entered as a pinch runner. Chris Parmelee grounded out, moving Cates to second. Benson then hustled down the line to beat out an infield single, but with runners at first and second, Estarlin de los Santos grounded into a game-ending double play.
The Miracle hope to salvage the final game of the series tongiht, Friday. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium.
