Miracle handed first series sweep Monday night

By Staff | Jul 14, 2009

The Palm Beach Cardinals blanked the Fort Myers Miracle 2-0 Monday night at Hammond Stadium, the first time all season the Miracle have been swept in a series.

The loss capped a rough homestand for the Miracle (8-10), at just 1-5 against the Sarasota Reds and Cardinals, the two teams that tied for last place in the Florida State League’s first half. The Miracle had swept two opponents at home earlier in the year (St. Lucie and Palm Beach) and two on the road (St. Lucie and Lakeland).

The Cardinals used a Troy Glaus double in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Mark Dolenc made a strong throw from the left-field corner to cutoff man Estarlin de los Santos to cut down a second runner. De los Santos fired to catcher Jair Fernandez, who had the plate blocked.

Palm Beach scored again in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Francisco Rivera and Tommy Pham. Just one inning earlier, Curt Smith became the second Cardinal gunned down at the plate, this time on a relay from right fielder Evan Bigley to Rene Leveret to Fernandez.

The Miracle left nine runners on base, including four in the final three innings, wasting a strong effort from Mike McCardell (9-6). The righty was denied his 10th win despite going seven innings with two earned runs allowed. He scattered 10 hits and struck out nine.

Tuesday is an off-day for the Florida State League due to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The Miracle are back in action Wednesday at Sarasota.
