The East Lee County Jaguars rode the momentum of fourth quarter turnovers by Bishop Verot to a 46-28 victory in a preseason game Friday night at Viking Stadium.

Both teams had quarters they’d love to replay and ones they’d rather forget.

The game started with a bang for East Lee. On the opening kickoff James Holland sprinted through the Vikings for a 97-yard touchdown. The Jaguars missed the two-point conversion, but came right back to score on a 27-yard field goal by Michael Hill.

Then things turned in the Vikings’ favor. They punched in a score when quarterback Jake Kistel scrambled six yards into the end zone. Meanwhile, Verot’s defense shut down East Lee. The Jaguars were scoreless for both the second and third quarters.

After receiving the second-half kickoff Hugo Delapenha headed straight up the middle. It looked as if the Jaguars had him stopped, but he freed himself and headed up the right sideline for a touchdown.

The Vikings stopped the Jaguars and East Lee’s punt was partially blocked. The net was a three-yard punt. Verot needed only three plays to score again. Jake Kistel threw a pass that landed in the hands of Jeff Farrell who muscled his way into the end zone.

The fourth quarter was Verot’s downfall. It started with the Jaguars in Viking territory. They went for it on fourth down and converted. That propelled them to a score.

Kistel was intercepted deep in Viking territory, and the Jaguars scored on an eight-yard pass. The Jaguars needed 39 seconds to score those two TDs.

The Vikings could not get a first down, and a bad snap from center allowed East Lee to recover on the 18-yard line, leading to another Jaguar TD.

“We will use this game as an evaluation of our squad,” said Verot coach Phil Dorn. “There’s a lot of work we still have to do.”

He was concerned over the number of Viking turnovers (five). One bright spot for the Vikings was how well kick-off returner Hugo Delapenha did. He had seven returns for 236 yards, averaging nearly 34 yards per return.
