Beach fire chief announces fire fighter layoffs
Fort Myers Beach Fire Chief Mike Becker has taken immediate action to reduce expenditures by eliminating six firefighter positions. Further layoffs will likely be necessary unless the Fire Union is willing to come to the table and re-open the Collective Bargaining Agreement, according to reports.
Many changes will occur over the next several months that may include reductions in minimum staffing, the possibility of closing a fire station and the administrative building. The Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District is committed to serving the community, the chief said.
