Miracle take five-game losing streak into playoffs
JUPITER – Boof Bonser didn’t allow a hit in his return to the mound for the first time in 2009, but the Fort Myers Miracle couldn’t mount late rallies against Jupiter as the Hammerheads swept Sunday’s season-ending doubleheader 3-1 and 6-5. The Miracle start the postseason having lost their last five games in a row.
Bonser pitched the fourth inning in the first game, recording a 1-2-3 frame. He started the fifth, but walked the leadoff hitter. That was the end of the day for the former first-round pick of the San Francisco Giants, who was dealt to the Minnesota Twins along with Francisco Liriano and Joe Nathan for A.J. Pierzynski in November 2003.
Bonser hasn’t pitched all year due to shoulder surgery. He last appeared in a professional game in September 2008.
David Bromberg will take the hill for the Miracle (81-58 overall) in Tuesday’s opener of the divisional playoffs against the Charlotte Stone Crabs (71-66).
The Miracle were 32-16 over the first two months, rolling to a first-half division title before repeating in the second half. They were solid all year at the plate and on the mound, finishing near the top of the league in both team batting (.265 – tied for second) and ERA (3.18 – second).
The Crabs were consistent in their first season in Port Charlotte, placing second in both halves, but struggled head-to-head against Fort Myers (6-14).
In the other divisional playoff series, the Tampa Yankees take on the Brevard Manatees.
The Manatees won 10 of their 15 meetings with the Yankees this season, outscoring their division rivals 67-50.
Fort Myers is the only playoff team that also made the postseason last season.
