Investigators probe armored truck heist

By Staff | Sep 11, 2009

Officials at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office today said that deputies responded to 12251 Metro Parkway, Fort Myers, in reference to an armored truck robbery.

The Robbery Unit assumed the investigation. Detectives learned a Brinks armored truck was at the gas station fueling up for the day. Multiple suspects approached the victim, Reitel Carbonell, while he was pumping gas. Carbonell told investigators there were two to three suspects wearing black clothing.

At gunpoint authorities said they forced him to open the door of the vehicle. One of the suspects reached into the vehicle taking an undisclosed amount of money, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The suspects then fled in a dark Honda 4-door vehicle. Within minutes of the reported robbery, another call was received by the Sheriff’s Office in reference to a vehicle fire in the area of Crystal Drive and Plantation Road. Deputies responded to an empty parking lot at 2543 Crystal Drive, where they located a dark purple Honda 4-door vehicle fully engulfed in flames. It appeared an accelerant had been used to start the fire, authorities said. South Trail Fire Department responded and put out the fire.

Victim Wilmer Mendez was the driver of the armored truck and was unableto provide any information as to the descriptions of the suspects.

No injuries were reported.
