The Cape Coral Seahawks went into their matchup with Fort Myers at Dave Warkentin Field Friday night with a plan to execute some great plays.

They made their share over the course of the 48-minute contest, but above all else, the game plan called for a long-awaited celebration when the clock struck zero.

Collectively, these Seahawks got it done, ending 15 years of frustration against the Green Wave with a 26-13 victory.

The Seahawks snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Wave, dating back to 1994. The team gathered in the end zone and pointed to the scoreboard, savoring the win.

“This is my senior year and I wanted it bad,” said Spencer Boyd, who rushed for 65 yards and had an interception. “I’m sure the rest of the team did, too. It’s been played out all week that we haven’t beaten them in 15 years, but that streak ends now.”

The Seahawks have largely been associated with being a running team given their speed and quickness in the backfield. That part of the offense had its moments, including an inspired three-play touchdown drive to start the second half.

The Seahawks, though, showcased a multi-dimensional attack as the game wore on.

Senior quarterback Jaylen Watkins hit junior receiver Prince Holloway for three touchdowns (11, 8, 32). Holloway finished with 100 yards on six receptions.

The first two scores came in the second quarter when Watkins scrambled and was able to locate Holloway slipping into the open spots.

“He’s real good at moving and finding the holes,” Watkins said of Holloway. “I try to hit Larry Gary a lot, but he’s a bigger guy and they put two guys on him. When I’m moving around, it always leaves (Holloway) open.”

The Seahawks (2-0) were again held back by turnovers. They turned it over six times, while the Wave (1-1) had four giveaways.

After the Seahawks fumbled a pitch attempt in the first quarter, the Wave capitalized on a 28-yard pass from Buddy McClendon to James Whitfield.

The Wave took a 13-7 lead on a three-yard run by Sydney Gartrell, but the Seahawks answered right before halftime on the second touchdown reception by Holloway.

The start of the third quarter was pivotal as the Seahawks took the ball down the field on three plays.

Watkins started it off by scrambling to his right and then changing directions and running all the way back to the left side for a 26-yard gain. He picked up some key blocks along the way, including one from Boyd.

The Seahawks capped the drive with another well-blocked play, springing Jeremy Davis for a 32-yard TD run. It put the Seahawks ahead 20-13.

“We went in there (at halftime) and made some adjustments and talked the team up. It got everybody real hyped,” Boyd said.

The remainder of the second half included a lot of turnovers by both teams, but Watkins managed to hit Holloway on a 32-yard fade pass early in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, the Seahawks received another dominant effort from 6-foot-3 junior Edsel Caprice. He had one sack, three tackles for loss, a pass deflection, forced fumble and fumble recovery, and blocked a punt.

“We wanted to make a statement and show everybody that we’re serious this year,” Caprice said.

The Seahawks now have a quick turnaround, playing at North Fort Myers Thursday night.
