Gachette nominated for Allstate title

By Staff | Sep 14, 2009

Quarterback Steve Gachette, a native of Lehigh Acres and a graduate of Southwest Baptist University, was recently named as a nominee for the Allstate/AFCA Good Works Team.

During a time when off-the-field college football headlines usually focus on what players are doing wrong, student-athletes like Gachette, who are nominated for the prestigious honor, embody the true spirit of teamwork and “giving back” through selfless contributions and commendable acts of kindness.

Gachette’s resume offers several examples of the positive impact he has had on his community. For example, he was one of 54 Bearcat players who donated blood at the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks blood drive when ice storms lowered the center’s reserve.

The quarterback also helped with the Big Car Little Cat program, visiting elementary schools weekly to assist teachers and help children with their reading skills.

Florida’s Tim Tebow was also selected as a Good Works Team nominee as was Tampa native and current Alabama Sooners standout defensive back, Javier Arenas.

A second-year sponsor of the award, Allstate has assembled a high-profile voting panel that has helped select the nominees, including former Good Works Team members Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia) and Mewelde Morre (Tulane), and Hall of Fame coach and ESPN personality Lou Hoilz, who is serving as the spokesperson for the program.
