Seahawks swept by Wildcats
Though the Cape Coral Seahawks were unable to break into the win column in their volleyball match against Estero Tuesday night, first-year varsity coach Lindsey Conley continues to see hard work from her team. It’s been that way since the start of this season.
“These girls, I can’t get them out of the gym. They work as hard as you can ask a group of girls to work,” Conley said.
The improving Seahawks played well in spurts Tuesday, but ultimately made too many errors and the visiting Wildcats took advantage in a 25-14, 25-16, 25-10 victory at “The Nest.”
“We’re still really young,” added Conley, who is coaching both the varsity and junior varsity squads. “I have one senior, so I’m stocked full of sophomores and juniors. We’re still working on eliminating mistakes and being more consistent.”
The Seahawks (0-4) received strong performances from several players, including senior Shannon McBride, who had three service aces and provided consistent play defensively and in the passing game.
Among the top hitters were sophomore Emily Snyder and juniors Cassie Maselter and Erica Hoegler, who each finished with two kills.
The Wildcats (4-1) opened with a 4-0 lead, but the Seahawks answered with four straight points, including an ace by McBride.
After the Wildcats went up 7-4, the Seahawks reeled off four straight, again, to take an 8-7 lead. Snyder blasted a shot for one point and Jennifer Le served consecutive points to put the Seahawks in front.
With the game tied 10-10, the Wildcats took over with a 15-4 closing run.
Nicole Davis had two kills in that game for the Wildcats, and the Seahawks struggled to communicate defensively as the game wore on.
Game two followed a similar pattern. The Seahawks controlled play briefly thanks to Hoegler’s serve. They built a 6-3 lead and maintained an 11-10 advantage before the Wildcats seized control.
Stacey Mielke had three kills and two aces for the Wildcats in game two and Cicely Sanders recorded two kills.
Both players continued to key the offensive attack as the Wildcats won more convincingly in the clinching game.
Prior to the varsity match, the Seahawks prevailed in three sets in the junior varsity contest, 25-16, 15-25, 15-11.
