Tritons turn back Gators
The visiting Mariner Tritons withstood comeback attempts by the Island Coast Gators in all three games Wednesday night, adding up to a 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 victory in a high school volleyball match.
“We need to learn how to sprint to the end,” Mariner coach Tom Faasse said. “Island Coast played hard and went for every ball.”
Senior Debra Swain slammed 13 kills to lead the Tritons (3-4). Junior Sam Greenwell dished out 23 assists and junior Abby Willis had 10 kills and six service aces.
The Tritons travel to Fort Myers Tuesday. The Gators (1-7) head to Estero Wednesday.
Charlotte 3, Cape Coral 0: The Seahawks mounted their biggest charge in game two, but were unable to turn the tide against Charlotte, and the visiting Tarpons came away with a 25-9, 25-20, 25-8 victory.
Sophomore Meagan Jenkins delivered an “awesome digging” performance for the Seahawks (0-6), coach Lindsey Conley said.
Senior Shannon McBride pitched in with four service aces and sophomore Alison Harper finished with four aces.
The Seahawks host Ida Baker Monday at “The Nest.”
Ida Baker 3, North Fort Myers 1: Senior Chelsey Cline came through with clutch serves down the stretch, lifting the Ida Baker Bulldogs to a four-set victory at North Fort Myers, 25-15, 19-25, 25-16, 25-23.
North led 22-17 in game four as it tried to force a fifth game tiebreaker, but the Bulldogs mustered a late charge.
Cline recorded several of the final points and tallied 16 service points overall.
The Bulldogs played shorthanded with two seniors, Chelsea Shafer and Stefanie Creamer, out of the lineup, but received solid contributions from Payton Van Horn (10 kills, four aces), Taylor Van Horn (12 kills, two aces and six blocks), Taryn Maymon (10 blocks, three kills) and Kali Nordquist (four kills).
The Bulldogs (5-1) play at Cape Coral Monday.
Bishop Verot 3, Fort Myers 2: Some adjustments in blocking assignments and defensive alignment enabled unbeaten Bishop Verot to defeat Fort Myers 19-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-22, 15-10.
Sarah Toggweiler blasted 17 kills to lead the Vikings, while Katie Mosher made 18 digs, Mandy Washburn had four blocks, Katie Clinger served five aces and Ciara Brown handed out 42 assists.
The Vikings (6-0) travel to LaBelle Thursday night.
