Two teens remained hospitalized following crash
Two Cape Coral teens remained hospitalized Wednesday after their car smashed head-on into a tree.
Joshua Metcalf, 17, the driver of the vehicle, was in serious condition Wednesday evening, according to hospital officials. His passenger, Zamantha Gordillo, 16, remained in critical condition.
Both teens received serious injuries when Metcalf’s 1990 Acura, traveling south at a high rate of speed, drifted left into the median in the 1800 block of Santa Barbara Boulevard, then traveled right into a vacant lot and struck a tree at about 4:14 p.m. Tuesday, according to city spokesperson Connie Barron.
Barron said the reason Metcalf’s car left the roadway was unknown Wednesday as police continued to investigate the incident.
Metcalf and Gordillo were pinned in the vehicle as a result of the crash and were extracted by Cape Coral Fire Rescue.
Barron said Gordillo was not wearing a seat belt.
Metcalf and Gordillo are expected to recover from their injuries, she said.
Police officials said they would release more information as it became available.
