Computer software upgrade to improve permitting process

By Staff | Sep 21, 2009

A new software system will be implemented Friday, Sept. 25, with continuation throughout the weekend, to upgrade the city’s Building Division permit applications.
According to city Public Information Director Connie Barron, the Cape Building Division will be converting to new software due to the age of the current programming.
“We are converting over to a software program that will be better for tracking purposes, modification, commenting and moving applications through the permitting process,” she said.
City staff will have limited access to permit information, as well as processing any permits until the conversion process is completed.
In addition, there will be no access for building permit customers Friday through Monday and individual access codes will no longer be valid as of Monday, Sept. 28.
All license holders will receive new universal PIN numbers as well. Each job still in progress will also receive a new PIN, which will replace current access codes. The building or licensing divisions will be issuing the new PIN numbers.
The new PIN numbers are to be obtained in person and will only be issued to the license holders.
Barron added, “We want the contractors to get in here as soon as possible to get their new PIN numbers. We would like them to do it by the end of the week before things are converted over.”
By mid-October, new access codes will be provided after the new software is successfully implemented.
The number of permits issued for new construction on a single-family homes year-to-date for 2009 is 147, compared to 5,390 permits in 2004.
Commercial permits issued year-to-date for new construction year-to-date for 2009 is 21, compared to 111 in 2006.
A total of 5,779 permits have been issued year-to-date for 2009, compared to 8,563 permits in 2005. The total amount includes permits for new construction on docks and pools, in addition to homes, duplexes, town houses, multi-family homes, commercial, industrial and religious buildings.
