Bulldogs claim sweep over Seahawks

By Staff | Sep 22, 2009

The Ida Baker Bulldogs had some players out of the lineup recently due to illnesses. They were back at full strength Monday, though, and showed a balanced attack in a 25-13, 25-11, 25-13 win over host Cape Coral in high school volleyball action.

Senior Chelsea Shafer pounded nine kills and senior Taylor Van Horn added eight kills.

Sophomore Brenna Hambsch had seven aces and 15 service points. Senior Deonnah Findley dished out 14 assists and sophomore Kali Nordquist tallied seven assists.

“It was a good team effort,” Bulldogs coach Rene Van Horn said.

The Bulldogs (6-1) face a difficult task Tuesday when they visit Riverdale. The Seahawks (0-7) visit Cypress Lake Tuesday.

n North Fort Myers 3, Dunbar 0: Dunbar’s service game was lacking and the host Red Knights took advantage, piling up the aces in a three-game sweep. The Red Knights (4-8) prevailed 25-10, 25-9, 25-12.

Sophomore Jessica Wagner had 13 aces for North to go along with eight kills. Sophomore Susie McKeever dished out 18 assists and added five kills.

n At Sebring: Though the Mariner Tritons had a rough outing at the Hawkins/Crutchfield Invitational, coach Marty Waters hopes his team can continue to learn from their mistakes. Better accuracy would be a start.

The Tritons finished with a team score of 329 in the 18-hole, par-69 event at Sun ‘n Lakes Country Club in Sebring.

“We have a lot of work to do in the next couple weeks,” Waters said. “We have to stay out of the woods.”

C.J. Cricco shot a 75 to lead Mariner. He was followed by Dean Hofer (81), Braden Junkins (83) and Kyle Schulte (90).

There were approximately 40 teams at the event. East Lake finished first with 289.

n At Oasis: Freshman Collin Cole led a host of Oasis runners in a forfeit victory over Naples First Baptist, which didn’t have enough runners to qualify for a team score.

Oasis competes in Saturday’s Optimist Meet at Veterans Park.
