Commissioners OK contract with county manager

By Staff | Sep 30, 2009

A five-year contract for new Lee County Manager Karen Hawes was unanimously approvedlast weekby county commissioners.

Lee County Attorney David Owen said one issue that was dropped from the agreement was the matter of needing a supermajority vote to terminate the county manager.

“Now any action taken by the board will be a simple majority of the board,” he said. Hawes assumes the post previously held by Don Stilwell, who was forced out of office in May.

Her base salary will be $170,000. Commissioner Ray Judah said that what Hawes requested in her contract for her salary was approximately $15,000 less than what the position was advertised for, which “speaks volumes about Mrs. Hawes.”

“She has provided tremendous leadership since April,” Judah said. “She is truly a county manager of the staff she works with and we are proud you are willing to accept the position.” Hawes said she appreciates the opportunity, adding that there are “good times ahead and lots of opportunities.”
