A teenaged boy is in fair condition today at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers following an accident lat weekon Leeland Heights Blvd. Hewas airlifted to the hospital after he was riding his bicycle and was hit by a vehicle on Sept. 30.

The boy was identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as Frederick Turner, 15, with no address listed on the report. Emergency personnel on the scene of the crash said the boy did not have an ID on him and were asking onlookers if they knew the youth.

The accident occurred at around 3 p.m. in front of Faith Lutheran Church and traffic was halted on the busy highway for about half an hour while EMTs from Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue rushed to the scene to stabilize the victim before he was airlifted to a hospital.

A bicycle lay on the grass about 20 feet away and the Florida Highway Patrol said it received extensive damages.

Trooper B. Ferrell who investigated the crash said the driver of the vehicle that struck the boy was Patricia C. Shaw, 46. She was not injured, but those on the scene said the front windshield of the vehicle had been shattered and the front end of the vehicle showed damage.

According to the police report, Shaw veered to the left into the eastbound lane of E. Leeland Heights Blvd. in an attempt to avoid hitting the boy on the bicycle.

Ferrell reported that Shaw’s vehicle struck the boy on the bike causing him to be thrown to the inside lane facing south on Leeland Heights Blvd.

Motorists and residents along the street made calls to 911 for help.

Jim Anthony, who lives at 502 Leeland Heights Blvd. said he heard a loud “whomp” noise and the screeching of tires. He said he ran out of his home and saw the boy on the highway and the car not far away with a crashed windshield.

“People travel very fast down this street. The speed limit should be lowered,” he said. He said it appeared that the boy hit the windshield before landing on the ground.,

The only charges that were brought were against the Shaw, who was driving the four-door Toyota. She was charged with having no proof of insurance with her, according to the FHP report.

A sidewalk runs down the street on one side, but the youngster was riding on the street when he was hit.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office dispatched deputies to the scene to help handle traffic and to keep onlookers away from the immediate scene of the accident.

Local EMT’s from the Lehigh Fire Dept. stabilized the teenager and called for a helicopter, which landed on Leeland Heights Blvd. to take the boy to a hospital.

The woman driving the Toyota was wearing her seatbelts at the time of the accident, according to the FHP report.
