By Staff | Oct 6, 2009

Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Inc. recently received a $4,600 grant from the Comcast Foundation for improvements at Girl Scout Camp Caloosa in North Fort Myers. The funds will be applied toward a long list of improvements still pending at the camp: the eradication of invasive plants from the remaining 59 acres not cleared, installation of a fire lane around the camp, and a new water system and septic tank.

In addition to thegrant and as a year-round partner of Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Inc., Comcast Cable of SW Florida recruited nearly 300 employees, family members, and friends to work with members of the Department of Forestry, Girl Scouts, other Girl Scout volunteers, and volunteers of the United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades to participate in a Comcast Cares Day event this past April during Comcast’s National Volunteer Week. They provided services to Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, Inc. by improving the facilities and grounds at Camp Caloosa in North Fort Myers

At the camp, volunteers stained and resealed the exterior wood of eight log cabins and one unit house, removed melaleuca trees and other invasive plant species from one acre of the camp, and also treated invasive stumps to prevent re-growth, which greatly enhanced the accessibility for Girl Scouts troops.

“Comcast generously provided all the materials needed to stain and seal the buildings and the spray to seal the tree stumps. Comcast also provided a barbeque lunch for all the volunteers and donated all supplies, food, and beverages for the day resulting in a donation in excess of $5,000 for the day,” saidKathy Carol, director of public relations for the Girl Scouts. Comcast Cares Day volunteers contributed more than 360,000 volunteer hours in more than 400 communities across the country, she said.

The grant from the Comcast Foundation is in recognition of Comcast’s commitment to the communities where its customers and employees live and work. Since its founding in 1999, the Comcast Foundation has distributed more than $64 million in cash support of programs implement locally in Comcast communities. “Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Inc. is extremely grateful to the Comcast Foundation and Comcast Cable of SW Florida for their generous support and continued commitment, Carol said.

Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Inc. is chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA and serves more than 11,000 girls in Manatee, Hardee, Highlands, Sarasota, DeSoto, Charlotte, Glades, Lee, Hendy, and Collier counties.
