October’s roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public and are provided by Courtney Barr:

ADULTS

English Caf

10 a.m. Fridays, October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

Practice your English in this free informal conversation session for adult ESOL and ESL students. Each 90-minute session provides adult learners a chance to practice speaking English on a variety of everyday situations. Participants may start at any time during the 10-week series. No advanced registration is required. Participants should have basic English skills.

Book Discussion: Steven Levitt’s “Freakonomics”

3:30 p.m. Monday, October 5

Read Freakonomics by Steven Levitt & discuss it with fellow community members! The East County Book Discussion Group is open to all.

Crafting Holiday Cards

6 p.m. Mondays, October 5, 12, 26

Join Monika Heutmann to create your own original holiday cards as beautiful keepsakes for special people in this 3-evening craft class. You will learn how to make four types of cards using iris folding, paper stitching, embossing, and cards using punches. Come to one class or all of them! Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

Moving Your Digital Photos into Your Computer & Beyond!

3 p.m. Thursday, October 8

So, you’ve taken a bunch of photos with your new digital camera. Now what? We have just the class for the beginner! You will learn how to copy photos from your camera’s memory card and save them to your computer. You will also learn some basics on how to improve your not-so-perfect shots before you print or email them, using software that is already on most computers. Registration is required.

Introduction to Business Decision Database

7 p.m. Monday, October 19

Learn how to access and use our new business program Business Decision. Business Decision provides geographically customizable consumer household, market segmentation, and demographic population estimates and forecasts to help small businesses add more customers, find the right site, and target media and marketing campaigns.

Chess Anyone?

7 p.m. Tuesday, October 20

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Everyone is welcome. Bring a personal chess set, if preferred. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is requested.

Toddler Storytime

10 a.m. Thursdays, October 1, 8

10 a.m. Wednesday, October 7

Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.

English-Spanish Family Storytime with Telemundo’s Martin Ycaza

2 p.m. Saturday, October 3

Enjoy a special storytime in English and Spanish with family and friends. To help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, there will be a special visit from Martin Ycaza. He is the host of the show “En Casa con Martin Ycaza” which airs on the local Telemundo channel.

Family Storytime

7 p.m. Tuesday, October 6

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

KIDS

Preschool Storytime

11 a.m. Thursdays, October 1, 8

11 a.m. Wednesday, October 7

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes.

Kids Read Down Fines

2 p.m. Saturday, October 24

Do you have library fines? Take care of them by reading! Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. For 18 years and younger.

TEENS

East County Anime Club

4:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 6

Join a group of teens with an interest in anime, manga and other aspects of Japanese culture. Snacks provided by Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.

Pizza and Books

4:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 27

Stop by the library with a favorite book, or one that you’ve read recently. Share what you liked or disliked with others, and enjoy pizza in the East County Regional Library’s Meeting Room! Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library. Registration is required.
