As a senior at Cypress Lake High School in 1985, Mike Broomhead thought he wanted to be a law enforcement officer.
“If someone told me 20 years ago one day I’d have a daily radio show, I would have told them they were absolutely nuts,” said Broomhead. “Who would want to listen to me?”
Today the answer is a lot of people. Broomhead recently signed a contract to serve as host of his own morning show five days per week on Newstalk 550KFYI in Phoenix, Arizona.
According to the KFYI site, “He is the fastest growing name in talk radio today. Mike uses his business and life experience to address the issues that we all face. Rooted in fiscal and social conservatism, Mike leaves no doubt where he stands on any issue.”
Mike’s public speaking career begins with the tragic loss of his little brother, Army Sgt. Thomas F. Broomhead, who was stationed with the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, out of Fort Carson, Colorado and was killed with four other soldiers on Memorial Day, May 27, 2003. He was on guard duty at a checkpoint in Fallujah when a vehicle pulled up and assailants fired on him.
Tom Broomhead played quarterback for Cypress Lake High School’s Varsity Football squad in 1986 and 87. After graduation, Tom stayed in Fort Myers and coached a Cypress Lake Hornets Pop Warner football team before joining the Marines. After a four-year tour with the Marine Corps, he enlisted in the Army. A part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he left a wife and three sons, ages 7, 9 and 11.
Living in Arizona and working as an electrician, after the loss of his brother Mike began speaking at pro-troops rallies across the country including events at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. He has not only shared his brother’s story, but his own beliefs on both television and radio.
“I have been privileged to speak about my brother’s service, the service of our soldiers, patriotism and the responsibility of citizens to be involved politically,” he said.
After hearing Mike speak in public and as a guest on call-in radio shows, KFYI asked him if he would like to try his own weekend morning show on their station.
“Because of my speaking engagements and outspoken nature, I kind of got to be a known name around Phoenix and other places,” he said. “In 2004 I was given my own weekend show and asked to fill in occasionally during the week.”
Over the past six years, Mike has made numerous guest appearances nationally on Good Morning America, the Fox News Channel and with Sean Hannity and has also served as master of ceremonies for two presidential visits in Arizona.
“This has always been about honoring our heroes, like my brother,” he said. “There are 30 million Iraqi people who are celebrating freedom because of the brave men like my brother.”

With his new weekly gig, Mike is learning to balance life as a full-time small business owner and daily radio host. He owns and operates Broomhead Electric with his wife Elaine.
Mike says he goes to bed around 7 p.m. each night in order to awake by 2 a.m. and get to he station to prepare for his morning show that begins at 5 a.m.
“Luckily I have a wonderful wife who keeps our business running while I’m on the air,” he said. “We are like many Americans working like crazy six to seven days per week.”
