Suspect flees house; rams deputy’s vehicle
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call early Friday morning about a burglary in progress. The incident occurred at 2:36 a.m., according to a police report, at a residence on Hawalaska Street near 28th Street SW in Lehigh Acres.
While deputies were enroute to the scene it was learned that the suspect was an ex-boyfriend of the resident and had gained entry into the home. Upon arrival deputies encountered the suspect as he ran from the duplex to a silver vehicle, investigators said.
The male suspect ignored orders of one of the deputies to stop and moved the vehicle striking the deputy. The deputy was not seriously injured and continued attempts to get the driver to stop, investigators said. The suspect again drove toward the deputy who fired shots at the suspect’ vehicle.
The suspect drove down a nearby street and was seen by another responding deputy who turned around. The suspect vehicle turned on to Wallace Avenue South before striking a black pickup truck parked in the driveway of a residence near 30th Street SW, according to the report. The driver ran from the vehicle, but was quickly apprehended by the responding deputy.
No one, including the suspect, was injured in the incident. Charges are pending further investigation. Identities of the victims and suspect were not available for release earlier today.
