Lehigh Acres Senior Center hosts Latin Fiesta

The Lehigh Acres Senior Center hosted a Latin Fiesta for members recently on Plaza Drive. Center Director Teresa Perkins welcomed members and offered a prayer before dinner.

Fiesta Volunteers Dolly Bishop, Penny Phillips, George McCollam, Ed Bishop, Shirley Emswiler and Peg Halvorsen served the catered Pollo Tropical dinner from Cape Coral.

The menu included ensalada (salad greens), pollo asado (roasted chicken), arroz en frijoles negros (rice and black beans), Pan en mantequilla (rolls and butter). Dessert was plantains (fried bananas), caliente en congelado refrescos (hot and cold beverages).

Buenos Dias! Hostess Teresa Perkins introduced first Danz Instructor Hugo Miquez. Tall, dark and handsome Miquez has been dancing since he was five years old, turning professional at 10 and at 15 won the National Hip Hop Championship in Miami. His beautiful partner and mother was Maryanka Alsina, born in Venezuela.

The couple entertained with the energetic Bachata, Merengue, and Salsa ending their program with audience instructions and enthusiastic participation. The duo passed out Student Danz Dollars, a $60 value good for half hour private lesson, 1 Newcomer Group Class, 1 Dance Party in their studio located off Metro Parkway behind the Shrimp Shack Restaurant in Fort Myers.

These professionals were impressed with the variety of dance opportunities local senior recreation facility offers to the community.

The Let’s Entertain group resumes meetings and practices for skits, plays and music Tuesday, October 6, 10-11:30 a.m. Daily dance classes: Mondays, Dance Exercises 9:15 a.m., Country Western Line Dance 2 p.m., Karoke 7-9 p.m.(second Monday); Wednesdays, Dancercise 9:15 a.m., Line Dancing 12:30 p.m., Afternoon Dance 2:30-4:30 p.m. (live Band 2nd and 4th week); Thursdays, Dance 7-9 p.m. First and third week; Fridays Beginners Line Dance 9:30-11 a.m., Tea Dance 1:30-4 p.m.

Volunteer Mildred Mellard, celebrating her 95th birthday, was honored with a rousing rendition of the Happy Birthday Song from her many friends and well wishers.
