Man tasered at lehigh bank here for resisting
Customers of the Wachovia bank AT 1130 Homestead Rd. in Lehigh Acres looked on as a man shouted obscenities and make threats to a Lee County Sheriff’s deputy who had been called to the bank by a fellow officer who was there attempting to investigate another matter
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said the man was Roland Lawrence Fisher, 24, of 1101 Vinita Ave., Port Charlotte, Fla. Lawrence, after several minutes of resisting arrest was held down by another officer who reported to the bank, too. fisher was eventually apprehended and charged with resisting an officer and disturbing the peace.
Motorists on Homestead Rd. thought a bank robbery was underway.
According to a report from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Robert Rabitt was summoned to the bank and upon arrival, he said he saw the officer who was there investigating a theft standing near a muscular black male wearing a white T-shirt and blue shorts.
Deputy Rabitt approached the suspect, Fisher, and Fisher immediately confronted the officer by screaming profanities, waving his arms, and stepping within a foot of the deputy.
Rabbit asked Fisher to lower his voice and step back to a more appropriate distance and fisher jabbed his right index finger with inches of the deputy’s face shouting more obscenities and threatening the deputy. Each time the deputy asked Fisher to step back, the response was the same by screaming out more profanities.
According to the report, Fisher began to calm down when his father, Roland Lawrence Williams, 43, tried to escort the young man away. However, within seconds the suspect again became agitated and stepped toward Deputy Rabitt and began screaming and again and waving his arms.
It was at this time that the deputy used his Taser at an attempt to gain compliance when he was ordered to lie down on the floor. According to the report, Fisher used the Taser to protect himself and nearby customers who witnessed the incident.
Investigators said that as Rabitt used the Taser, the suspect turned in an evasive manner that prevented the Taser from being effective. Fisher broke away from the prongs and wires and ran out of the bank, running north through the bank parking lot and toward the SunTrust bank at 1110 Homestead Rd.
Deputy Rabbit took chase and apprehended Fisher at the back of the SunTrust building. Deputy Jaime Thorpe responded and assisted in the apprehension, investigators said.
Both officers ordered Fisher to lie on the ground but he again began showing the same type of aggressive hostility toward them that he had shown toward Rabitt earlier, the report stated.
Deputy Thorpe pulled out his Taser and ordered Fisher to the ground. this time, fisher complied.
however, as Deputy Rabitt attempted to handcuff the suspect, Fisher tensed his arms and pulled away while attempting to stand up in an apparent attempt to prevent Rabitt from handcuffing him.
However, Rabitt handcuffed Fisher’s right wrist, but was not able to handcuff the left. Deputy Thorpe had to place his knee across Fisher’s back to keep him down so Deputy Rabitt could handcuff both wrists, according to the police report.
Deputy Rabitt helped the suspect to his feet and began walking him toward a nearby patrol car when Fisher became unruly again and lunged at the deputy and attempted to head butt him in the face. The deputy sprayed Fisher in the face with pepper spray to subdue him, but the suspect continued physically resisting as both deputies tried to put him into a sheriff’s vehicle.
Once inside, the suspect screamed and kicked the cage in the rear of the car.
