Design A Bookmark contest winners announced

By Staff | Nov 3, 2009

See the work of some of the area’s young artists, at your library. Hundreds of children participated in the annual “Design a Bookmark” contest at the Lee County Library System. Their entries will be on display at Lee County Library System locations November 9 15.

Each year, the library invites local third to fifth graders to create bookmarks with a theme about reading. This year’s theme, “Dive Into Reading!” inspired a wide variety of ideas, according to Lee County Library System Program Coordinator Voncile Williams.

“We received hundreds of bookmarks that represented the heights reading takes young people. Some of the winning artists expressed themselves with diving penguins, book-shaped fish and a variety of sea creatures and scuba divers enjoying a good read,” Williams said.

Judges selected one winning design from each location. Those designs can be viewed on the Lee County Library System website: www.leegov.com/library.

Each of the winning artists will receive a supply of his or her bookmarks to share with friends, family and classmates, as well as a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble on U.S. 41 in Fort Myers at a special reception in the store Friday, November 13 at 7 p.m.

Those winners from the eastern part of Lee County include:

Lee County Bookmobile, Cheyenne Brokaw, 5th grade, Mirror Lakes Elementary.

Riverdale Branch Library, Indigo Siemienski, 5th grade, River Hall Elementary.

East County Regional Library, Lehigh Acres, Bryn Parsons, 5th grade, Orangewood Elementary.
