The Lee County Sheriff’s Office today said the results of Salturday’s initiative to dump unused medical prescriptions at three sites in Lee County, including Lehigh, surpassed last year’s effort. Officials said that more than 100,000 prescription medications were dropped off for disposal. The final results are as follows:

Cape Coral, Wal Mart 51,864

Estero, Coconut Point/Hollywood Theaters 30,543

Lehigh Acres, Wal Mart 19,871

Grand total 102,278

Have you wondered what you should do with your old prescription medications when you are no longer taking them. Environmental officials say they should not be flushed into a utility sewer system or a septic tank because the chemicals can leak into the underground water tables.

The Lee county Sheriff’s Office has scheduled what they are calling a “Prescription Clean-Out.” It is set for Saturday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three locations in Lee County.

* Walmart at 2523 Lee Blvd., Lehigh Acres., just before Lee Blvd.

* Coconut Point Mall in Estero in front of Hollywood Theaters (U.S. 41 between Corkscrew and Coconut Rd.)

* Walmart, 1619 Del Prado Blvd., Cape coral, north of Veterans Parkway.

A spokesman in the Sheriff;s Office community Relations Division said that every day in the U.S., approximately 2,500 youths between the ages of 12 and 17 abuse prescription drugs for the first time.

The Sheriff’s Office said this is a proactive stance in removing and properly disposing of unused prescription medications. The drop off also includes any over the counter medications that are outdate and/or you are not taking any longer. A spokesman for the agency at the “Clean-Out” said all those who get rid of their medications will remain anonymous and no questions will be asked. You can dump all your medications in a bag and not include your prescription bottle that carries your name.
