Word on the Street for week of Nov. 4-11

By Staff | Nov 10, 2009

In light of the layoff of 37 firefighters and EMTs, should we turn over the ambulance service in Lehigh to the county for now so that more personnel can man fire trucks? Lehigh residents have paid millions of dollars in taxes to the county transport already for the service.

Chuck Saloman

Lehigh Acres

“I think ambulances should be turned over to the county for now. They will put the ambulances in strategic places all over the county, including Lehigh, so my answer is yes. And I understand we can then reopen Station 105 on Milwaukee Blvd.”

“We need more firefighters to be on those engines, not less. For that reason I am for letting the county run the ambulance service. I understand there would be ambulances in Lehigh, but under country EMT control.”

Ron Waters

“It sounds reasonable to me. We have to do what we have to do in these difficult economic times.”

“I think Lehigh would be much better off to let the county run the ambulance services. If there are fires and with it getting so dry, I would rather have more firefighters on our trucks than less.”

Courtney Semrick

“I’m all in favor of it because it will mean more firemen to fight fires and this fall and winter will probably be a bad brush fire season. I know the county can take care of the ambulance service and Lehigh will be a little safer.”
